Night Spirals

Night Spirals (1981, re. 2019)

The image behind Night Spirals is Van Gogh’s Starry Night. And there’s a line in Neruda’s Tonight I Can Write:

“The night wind revolves in the sky and sings”.

This piece is a romantic view of the night sky moving in a slow spiral. It is in three divisions. The first division is a succession of episodes that “revolve” inward toward the middle division which is a hub where the night is concentrated and from which the third division “spirals” outward. At this point, the episodes of the first division appear in reverse order, and the scoring of the music is inverted.
